IC INFORMATION

Character Name: Thancred Waters
Canon: Final Fantasy XIV
Canon Point: Toward the end of 6.0/Endwalker, after he rushes Meteion and is de-materialized upon arriving at Ultima Thule.
Background: Here!

Suitability:
Regardless of where Thancred ends up and which nation he aligns himself with (if any), he has a wealth of experience that will allow him to hold his own after suddenly waking up in a new world with not even the clothes on his back. This is not the first time this has happened to him, in fact, as within canon he was whisked away to another world with little warning and had to live there for five years before making it home. This means that he'll understand from the get-go that he's probably going to be in for the long haul in Abraxas.

As for the political situation in Abraxas, Thancred will likely start off neutral as he gets his bearings. He is someone who functions best with the proper intel and he has the skillset to do the necessary reconnaissance to determine where he stands with Thorne, Solvunn, and the Free Cities and make an informed decision on which of them he wants to support. In canon when he was on the First he ultimately sided with the Crystarium against Eulmore, though that was a fairly simple decision given that Eulmore had locked up the reincarnation of a close friend of his, who he ultimately broke free of her prison. The point being that he is willing to ally himself with a particular nation against another if he has reason to, but how that ends up playing out will depend greatly on his experiences once he arrives.

However it all unfolds, he has honed skills in espionage, subterfuge, and survivalism that would allow him to sneak into another nations to gather intel, scout for whichever party he's allied to, and so forth. He will also have a large interest in the Singularity as soon as he realizes that it is the mechanism by which they all arrived. Magic and magical theory is not so much his forte, but he'll want to help in that investigation as much as he's able. Naturally, he will have intense loyalty to his canonmates (particularly Himeka) and will be ready to aid her in whatever cause she champions.

Powers:
SPYCRAFT — Thancred is skilled in espionage, infiltration, subterfuge, reconnaissance, gathering intel, survivalism, and basically any and all things you would expect a trained spy to be able to do. This also entails putting on a front of sorts to take others' guard down and pull information out of them, if necessary. He can also hold his breath for a long time — canonly it's stated as at least two minutes.

SOULDEEP INVISIBILITY — Thancred is able (as a part of this same training) to suppress his own aether (his lifeforce, essentially) to make himself completely invisible and undetectable. (He also has to hold his breath to do this.) The downside being that his movement is slowed and it puts an extreme strain on his body, affecting his vital signs. In other words, this is something he can only do for a small amount of time before he puts himself in great danger. (Unfortunately, because of who he is as a person, he can and will put himself in that danger if he deems it necessary.)

SCARRED AETHER — This is more a lack of power, but one last important note is that Thancred used to be able to manipulate aether in order to cast magic, but due to a series of unfortunate events, he can no longer do that! He is still extremely capable in a fight, particularly with blades, but he relies on his comrades to magically imbue the cartridges he loads into his gunblade, for instance. Thankfully, he's more than competent with a plain old pair of knives too.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
When Thancred was just a young boy, an orphan scrabbling for whatever he could find in the pirate-laden port city of Limsa Lominsa, he tried to pickpocket a man by the name of Louisoix. This single event changed the course of his life, as Louisoix saw the potential in Thancred and instead of marching him off to a cell, he took him back to his home city of Old Sharlayan. There, Thancred was formally trained in the skills that Louisoix had recognized in him and went so far as to become an Archon, meaning that he is considered preeminent in his field (of espionage, etc).

Through Louisoix, Thancred was also inducted into the Circle of Knowing, which then became known as the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. This is how he met the majority of the important people in his life. It offered him a place he belonged, a home, and a purpose. The Scions function as a tight-knit organization of people who wish to protect the realm of Eorzea from various threats while also not being tied to any one nation, allowing them a freedom they wouldn't otherwise possess. Thancred has been working as a Scion for most of his adult life, putting his skills to use to get them the information they need both near to home and far afield.

Were it not for him choosing to target Louisoix on that fateful day, his life would have turned out very differently.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
There is a quote of Louisoix's that the Scions will frequently reference when it comes to their cause: "To ignore the plight of those one might conceivably save is not wisdom—it is indolence." This is specifically in reference to the neutral, hands-off policy that is held by the forum of Old Sharlayan, with which Louisoix frequently butted heads. If there are people in need, regardless of where they come from or what god they do or do not worship, the Scions will likely be there to offer aid and succor.

Despite this, Thancred is a self-admitted pragmatist. He is not necessarily one to assume that everything will work itself out, or he at least believes that work will need to be put in to make that happen. It is his nature to account for any way that a plan may not go as intended (as often happens) and he is the one on the team who tends to keep the other Scions grounded and focused.

That being said, he will not shy away from impossible odds. When the world is on the brink of destruction and there is a safer option that would save some people but consign the world to destruction (an exodus from the planet), Thancred instead goes with the long shot of trying to find a way to save their home — because it's what the rest of the Scions believe in with all their hearts. Once he is committed to something, he is not likely to give up on it. He'll see it through to the end.

What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Thancred has a great deal of admiration and respect for all of his friends, and will often voice this while making some self-deprecating remark about himself in the same breath. Still, if he goes so far as to make it clear to someone that he's impressed by them, it means he's genuine.

For the Warrior of Light, he finds their ability to always press on no matter how much is on their shoulders extremely impressive, especially with how often they make incredibly difficult tasks look easy. He often remarks on how they're far too humble as well (which is a bit of a case of the pot calling the kettle black). In Minfilia, he admired her ability to hold strong even when she'd lost so much, and her quiet yet determined way of leading the Scions and serving as a sort of beacon for all of the rest of them to gather around and follow.

In Y'shtola and Urianger, he admires their undogged pursuit of knowledge. In Alphinaud and Alisaie, it's their ability to never back down from their goals, even if their approaches are often so different (Alphinaud exceling in political maneuvering and diplomacy while Alisaie is more about action and boots on the ground).

For Ryne, he was taken aback by her ability to always see the best in other people and her ability to put herself in their shoes and understand their perspective. He admires the sheer amount of heart that she has — and she was always a good student.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Yes, definitely. Thancred is in many ways defined by mistakes made over the course of his life, or at least instances that he perceives as being his fault. He has a tendency to take personal blame for events that unfold even if there were many moving parts that led to that outcome. This perhaps started with his inability to catch the man responsible for the death of Minfilia's (then Ascilla's) father, but continued to events such as not being able to aid a rookie Warrior of Light in their fight against Ifrit and not being able to keep Minfilia safe during their escape from Ul'dah. Thancred is therefore in a constant state of trying to prove himself to others and to meet his own high standards. While he might come across as self-assured and even cocky at first glance, he will casually work in self-deprecating comments about himself with a worrying frequency, never willing to give himself much credit for his skills or accomplishments.

As he says to Emmanellain, "I have fought tooth and nail for the people I hold dear— done everything in my power to save them... and I have failed. Learn to live with it. I have."

In fact, his need to push himself so hard to make up for his shortcomings is the exact reason that he was susceptible to possession by the Ascian, Lahabrea. Burning the candle at both ends and putting such strain on himself meant that he was easy pickings for body-snatching. This is something that he never forgets.

His relationship with Ryne was also colored by Thancred's complicated feelings toward Minfilia, and it took a long while for him to actually open up to her as a father figure and make it clear that he loved her and was proud of her due to a whole lot of emotional constipation. He does eventually move past it, but he has regrets for taking so long to make sure Ryne knew she was loved.

What is their sign, and why?
Thancred's sign is Strength, particularly because in recent canon, despite the fact that his training is in sneaking around and remaining hidden, he has taken on the role of a Gunbreaker (that is, a tank role) among the Scions. This means that when they have to go the direct route for a fight, he is the one who is leading the charge and drawing all of the fire. Thancred has always been dedicated to protecting his friends, and this desire only increased when Ryne came into the picture.

His canonpoint is right after he and the other Scions are ambushed by Meteion, the big bad AKA a sort of embodiment of despair who attempts to kill them all by sucking the air out of the room. He's able to hold his breath long enough to rush at her, and even as she unmakes him, he wishes so much for the rest of the group to survive that he makes the air of Ultima Thule breathable and allows them a path to move forward. This shows that he will not hesitate to give his life to ensure the safety of his loved ones.
