[ Surprise flits across her expression, and a far less angry one at that, as she reaches out to return his handshake. ]
Hilda Goneril. You're familiar with them? Does that mean you're from the same world as Reno and Himeka are?
[ Reno had mentioned that the moogles had come from Himeka's world but had neglected to mention whether or not they were from the same place. Or maybe she had never asked. Whoever was at fault for that (but if they were casting blame it would obviously be Reno's fault somehow), doesn't quite matter now because rude gesture or not, Mogwry apparently has had enough sass out of the Very Rude But Handsome Man.
Catching the furious flutter of wings from the corner of her eyes, she can knows where this is going. Rarely did she think twice about her Crest and its strange abilities, but if there's ever a moment for it to come in handy it's now. As soon as Mogwry launches himself at Thancred, Hilda is quick to catch him in the crook of her arm like how someone might catch a football. ]
Can you relax!? What is your issue? It's just a game of cards! [ Immediately her fist connects with his little fur head. ] You're embarrassing me!
[ Even as her noogie continues she looks back towards Thancred with an apologetic look. ]
[ Hilda Goneril. The name doesn't ring much of a bell. Perhaps here or there on those messages sent by their minds he had seen it, but Thancred's quite certain they haven't had a direct interaction before now.
When she implies that Reno is from Etheirys alongside him and Himeka, Thancred huffs out a half-laugh as he raises an incredulous brow. ] Himeka, yes. Reno, no. I believe he's from a world called Gaia, although there are some similarities between our stars. [ There were also plenty of differences. The building that had made up Reno's domain had resembled those in Amaurot far more than anything that could be found in Eorzea.
Either way, it's clear that Hilda is from somewhere else entirely, and any connection between her and Reno was formed here.
Before Thancred can explain any further, he sees Mogwry's wings flap at what might be called an alarming rate. If the furry little bastard thinks he can do any sort of damage, he has another thing coming, and yet Hilda snatches him out of the air before much more can happen. Watching Hilda bully the moogle after she accused Thancred of doing so is quite amusing, to be honest, and he takes a moment to just watch. The moogle's wiggling body and cries of protest, Hilda's high-pitched tone, it all makes for quite the first impression. ]
Just what was your plan, exactly? [ The question is directed to Mogwry with a slow shake of his head. ] If you're so dedicated to improving your Triple Triad game, I might be willing to tutor you. For the right price.
[ Does he actually have a price in mind? No. But he has to give the fuzzy shite a hard time. ]
[ Her nose wrinkles slightly at the incredulous laugh, uncertain if it had been directed at her or not. Fortunately for Thancred, she's well aware that he's already dealt with one small, angry creature today. It wouldn't make the best impression to pick a fight over an assumption and release another small, angry creature on him.
(It's her. Hi. She's the small angry creature, it's her.)
Thancred's offer is a kind one even if it's tinged with a mildly haughty tone that she suspects is definitely meant to aggravate Mogwry. Not that she blames him. If she were Thancred she'd probably do the same. She watches as Mogwry weighs the offer, apparently picking up on the tone and the smug look on Thancred's face. There's another beat of silence before the thrashing comes to a halt. How much are we talkin', kupo?
Hilda's brow arches. It's not like the moogle has any coin to his name so that'll mean she'll be the one paying for it. Although, does currency even matter in the Horizon? Whatever. She'll indulge him. ]
[ Currency definitely doesn't mean much in the Horizon, so if Thancred is going to actually charge something for his services, he'll need to get a bit more creative. All of that can be sorted out later, though, as he is doubtful that Mogwry is going to accept his offer in the first place.
He considers Hilda's question, his smile turning from smug to something a bit more genuine and wistful as he thinks back on the many times he played Triple Triad back home. Sometimes it was like this, for the purpose of aggravating someone and throwing them off (usually so he could wheedle information out of them), but other times it had simply been for the fun of it. ]
If you like card games, I suppose. It does take a fair bit of strategy, and a little luck. [ He shifts his weight and braces a hand on his hip, then lifts his other hand. A set of five cards appears gripped between his fingers, and for a moment he even feels like an Astrologian. Is this why Urianger insists on being so flashy when he weaves his spells? ] There is a place back on my star called the Gold Saucer, where people gather to gamble and play various games, Triple Triad being one of them. But you can find those who play the world over, and if you're lucky, can even win a rare card off of your opponent. Collecting them is just as much a part of it.
[ Did Hilda actually want to know that much? Who can say. But now she knows. ]
[ Mogwry might. But only because he's desperate to beat the stupid handsome white-haired man. And much like the woman's domain he resides in now, he probably has a bit of a petty streak embedded in him now. Which, if someone stops to think about it, parts of Reno's personality with Hilda's mixed into a tiny moogle body sounds downright terrifying.
A part of her understands that the appearance of the cards magically appearing in Thancred's hands must have to do with the magic of the Horizon. But magic or not, she's still impressed. If anything, it warms her to the idea of it even if it doesn't sound exactly like the sort of thing she'd normally partake in. Strategy? Using her head? No thanks. ]
Alright, so how do you play it then?
[ She motions towards the place that both Mogwry and Thancred were sitting at before she came barging in with her axe. ]
Of course. And here I thought you would never ask.
[ With a less flashy flick of his wrist this time, a small table appears in the clearing, on which sits a flat game board. Two tree stumps perfect to use as chairs also sprout up out of the ground on either side of the table, allowing both of them to sit and play.
Once he's seated, he first draws Hilda's attention to the board. ]
As you can see, it's a three-by-three board, and in each place a card can be played. Now...
[ He leans forward and hands her one of the cards from his deck. And, perhaps just to be funny, it's a Moogle card. ]
Each card has a series of numbers like this, and each number corresponds to the top, left, right, or bottom of the card. Think of it as a point value.
[ His gaze flicks up to her. He's actually a decent teacher, all things considered, his tone steady and patient. Nor is he rushing through the rules so quickly that she can't keep up. ]
[ She can't help but roll her eyes at that. What if she hadn't asked, she wonders? Thancred probably wouldn't have cared. Then again, what better way to kill time than by learning a new card game? With Mogwry still in the crook of her arm, she wanders over to the little table that magically appears in the clearing and takes a seat.
The moogle is quick to push her arms away and settle in her lap, leaving her hands free to take the offered card. There's a muttered I'm cuter than that, kupo, which is met with a soft sigh and a weary look aimed at the back of the moogle's head. There are more important things that Mogwry's vanity however and she nods. ]
I think so. And the next thing you're going to tell me is that there are higher value cards and lower value cards, right?
[ That remark from Mogwry is so quintessentially Moogle that Thancred cannot help but be amused for a moment, a smile flashing across his face. It does help that both the furry little creature and Hilda are now playing along and listening to this impromptu lesson.
Are there better ways they could pass the time? Potentially. But Thancred also knows that working constantly is a recipe for disaster, having learned that one firsthand, so he makes the effort to periodically relax like this. ]
Ah, a quick study. Yes, if a card has quite a few higher numbers on it, then it's a naturally a higher value card, and you can only have so many of those in your deck. The value of the card is indicated by the numbers of stars on it, from one to five with five being the strongest.
[ Here, he can't help himself. He glances up and makes direct eye contact with Mogwry. ]
And it seems whoever created the game felt that the Moogle should be a 1-star card.
It wouldn't be much of a game if the cards didn't have different values.
[ She huffs his compliment away as superficial as it may be. As it stands though, it's starting to sound a lot like card games she's familiar with from Fodlan. Conscious that this is only the start though she withholds any sassy comments at least for now.
Someone who doesn't seem all that inclined to withhold them however is the man sitting across from her. It's unexpected and it shows in the way she arches an eyebrow and immediately has to stifle a snort. Mogwry, who had been sitting calmly in her lap until that point immediately jerks his head back up to glare at him, pompom wobbling furiously as he waves a little paw at him. Kupo - what are you implyin'?
Someone should really give her credit for managing to hold it together and not burst into outright laughter. Her words are definitely laced with amusement however. ]
Thancred didn't make the game. Can you relax? [ And then to Thancred - ] Are the other cards of other creatures from your world?
[ With the outrage from Mogwry, his pompom and how it wiggles around — Thancred can barely hold back on a laugh himself, and he's relieved that he and Hilda are on the same page when it comes to this little Horizon construct in the form of a furry creature. (That is, that it's way too much fun to give him a hard time.)
Hilda does a good job of quelling Mogwry's anger, though, and she's right: he certainly didn't design any of these cards.
He leaves the teasing aside for now, nodding at Hilda's question. ]
Creatures primarily, yes — including chocobos if you've seen any of them in the Free Cities. Oh, and a morbol, hopefully you didn't run into that one. But also primals... [ He pauses, realizing she isn't likely to recognize the word, and clarifies. ] God-like beings. There are even some cards that are of people of interest, city-state rulers or notable members of guilds, that sort of thing.
[ He leans forward and hands her the rest of his deck so that she can see some more examples: a chocobo, a behemoth, Bahamut, and one Miss Tataru Taru. ]
[ Thancred's barely restrained laughter is still felt in the atmosphere around them and for some reason it feels warmer than it had been moments before she busted down his proverbial door. It draws her gaze towards him, admiring the way amusement sits on him as she continues to ignore Mogwry's grumbling.
The words chocobo and morbol are at least vaguely familiar to her and it dawns on her that Thancred is likely referring to the incident that brought all manner of creatures from Summoned's worlds into Abraxas. Recognition appears in her gaze as she looks at the chocobo card but the other three are met with a little crease between her brows. The first two seem like the sort of thing that she'd expect to be put on a card game, but the last one... ]
Is she supposed to be a...primal? [ And just in case she is - ] Not that I'm judging any Gods just in case they're listening but I guess compared to the other ones she seems really [ There's a pause as she searches for the word. ] small.
[ It's remarkable how quickly they went from glaring at each other to sitting down and having a good time, but on the other hand, that's what Thancred has trained for years to be adept at: putting others at ease, so that they'll let their guard down around him.
In this case, it's far more genuine that if he was "working." He mainly just wants to get to know a fellow Summoned with whom he shares a mutual friend, now gone. (Or preserved, in some way, via Mogwry?)
And if his laughter filled the small campsite before, now it reverberates off of the nearby trees as Hilda asks if Tataru is a primal. ]
No, no, though there are times she can almost be as frightening as one. She is in charge of both the coffers and administrative organization of the order I'm a part of back home. Were it not for her, I would likely never get paid a living wage.
[ A soft smile remains on his lips as he thinks back. It's been quite some time since he's seen her now, yet at least this time it doesn't appear that any time is passing back home. It helps to know that Tataru isn't worrying herself to death, like when they all were dragged to the First. ]
You might not know it looking at that card, but she's a ruthless businesswoman.
[ Frankly, if Thancred had told her that point blank she probably wouldn't have been very surprised. Nobles all played a similar game and Hilda was no exception. The key difference there is that had never been any formal training or any political intent behind it on her part. All of it had been for her own gain. And gain for much of Hilda's life meant doing the most not to lift a finger or break a sweat before later on using it only when she deemed it necessary - like when Claude asked.
Something something, use your power for good not evil.
But all of that is to say that ulterior motives are the farthest thing from her mind at the moment. Not when she feels the genuine sound of Thancred's laugh. A life in noble company had been more tiring than she had anticipated; she vastly prefers this. Even if this had started in a strange way.
She gazes at the card, making a show of scrutinizing it and the portrait of the cheerful visage on it. ]
You know what, I'd believe it. Especially if she made it into a card game.
[ Thancred gives a firm nod in response to Hilda's assessment of Tataru. ]
Yes, she was responsible for that. And for having all of us added as well, in time...
[ That second remark is pitched a little lower, almost as if he doesn't want Hilda to hear. What good does it do to try and keep a low profile when people have a card with his face on it all throughout Eorzea? The only saving grace is that it had been a rare enough printing that it didn't go into wide circulation.
At her question he sighs and shakes his head, leaning back on the makeshift seat. ]
Unfortunately, no, for now I can only play in the Horizon. I suppose that I could try to commission a deck to be created somewhere in Thorne, especially with arcana decks being all the rage, but I haven't gone to that effort just yet. Besides, multiple decks would need to be made for the game to work as intended, so...
[ He shrugs in defeat. There are generally better uses for his coin, so this hasn't been at the top of his list to pursue. ]
[ If Thancred was hoping that Hilda wouldn't hear it, he'd be disappointed to hear that she did. Mogwry did too, head snapping up to look at Thancred with an amused air about him. Kupo, why would anyone want a card with you on it? What with your ugly mug -
Hilda's hand returns to his mouth, clamping down on it to muffle whatever the rest of that sentence might be without batting an eye. Instead of scolding the little moogle (he'll be getting an earful later when they return to her domain) she decides to tease Thancred instead. ]
You mean you wouldn't want your handsome face circulating amongst the Summoned on a deck of cards?
[ While she may be teasing him, it's impossible for his lack of cards to plant a seed of an idea in her mind. Whether it comes to fruition has yet to be seen. ]
[ When Mogwry pipes up after actually keeping quiet for a short time, Thancred rolls his eyes and points a finger at the fussy Moogle. ] And yet my card has a three-star value—
[ But perhaps he shouldn't encourage this behavior, and when Hilda cuts Mogwry off, Thancred lets it go. It really isn't worth his time to get into an argument with an imaginary Moogle, is it.
He focuses instead on Hilda's tease, as it's much more complimentary. ] Oh, so I'm handsome, am I? [ Said like someone who definitely knows he's handsome. ] Unfortunately, I do also have to keep a somewhat low profile around Thorne for a variety of reasons, so it's for the best that there's no reprint here.
[ At least not with him as one of the subjects. Still, the idea of a deck based around the Summoned is quite amusing. ]
In any case, I'm glad you found your Moogle, and I appreciate you listening to my impromptu lesson. [ Not that he even got into all the rules, but that can always wait for another time, if Hilda turns out to be interested in actually playing. ]
[ Now that is an all knowing tone that Hilda is too aware of. Her roommates were masters of it. She is too, to some degree although she'd be hard-pressed to admit as much. Curiosity sparks at his mention of needing to keep a low-profile. It could be another jest for all she knows, but it could very well not be either. As much as Hidla would love to probe a little further, she knows that the longer she stays, the more likely it will be that Mogwry is to start a fight. Especially after that three-star value comment. Mogwry certainly didn't like that.
His little pom-pom bobs furiously, his neck craning around to try and look at Hilda as if that would somehow convince her to release him. When he had shown up at her doorstep, the last thing Hilda had signed up for was an attack moogle. Somehow she manages to continue to seem completely unfazed as she bats her eyes. ]
Thank you for taking the time out of your busy, low-profile schedule to show me despite my moogle being rude.
[ The eyelash batting stops, if only so she can sound as sincere as she means to me. ]
I'd love another lesson if you have the time in the future. And maybe if you find some decks outside of the Horizon we could play in person.
[ Mostly so that she can focus her attention on the game instead of dividing it between a lesson and her angry moogle friend. ]
[ When the eyelash batting starts, Thancred can only smile. Hilda has made quite the first impression, especially with her ability to somehow wrangle even the most difficult moogle without missing a beat. ]
Any time. It was a pleasure. Whether it's here or in person, we'll most certainly have to find a time to play.
[ It's been so long since he was able to have a proper match, since he's not quite sure Mogwry counts. (Sorry, Mogwry.)
Sensing that Hilda's ready to take her leave and return to her own domain to discipline Mogwry however she chooses, Thancred stands to escort her out of the woods. ]
